Travelers who frequent State Route 112 between Neah Bay and Sekiu should expect construction delays that began yesterday. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has initiated substantial repair work along this stretch, which is expected to last through the fall and pick up again in the spring and summer of 2026.

As the crews get to work, one-way alternating traffic will be put in place in various sections to facilitate the repair process. According to a report by WSDOT, the construction efforts will focus on culvert replacement, hillside stabilization, and pavement restoration. In particular, ten culverts between mileposts 0 and 8, which are currently clogged, leading to water overflow onto the highway, will be replaced.

The road's structural integrity has been compromised due to winter storms in 2022 and 2023, particularly between mileposts 4.7 and 5.4 at Rasmussen and Jansen creeks, where embankment repairs are needed. Not only will the infrastructure see necessary repairs, but also safety improvements, as old highway signs from mileposts 0 to 41 are set to be replaced, and guardrails are brought up to current safety standards.

Furthermore, Lakeside Industries, Inc. has been awarded an $8 million contract for paving works over seven miles of State Route 112. These areas, stretching from east of Neah Bay to Sekiu near Chito Beach, show significant damage from landslides and general deterioration over time. Paving will commence this year with continuation planned for the following summer and fall, as stated in WSDOT's announcement.

Those who rely on SR 112 for their daily commutes or occasional travels are advised to plan for extra time due to the anticipated delays and to stay informed on the progress of the work. The WSDOT will provide ongoing updates, ensuring road users are kept in the loop regarding construction impacts and road conditions as these improvements and repairs are underway.
