In the wake of revised statewide swimming pool regulations, Union County Public Health has reiterated its stance on ensuring safety for swimmers in public pools, despite new legal exemptions for some residential pools. According to a recent update from Union County's official website, North Carolina’s General Statute §130A-280, amended as of July 1, has altered the landscape by allowing certain short-term rental residential pools to operate without a public swimming pool permit.
This legislative tweak doesn't mean it's a free-for-all in Union County where the local Public Health department remains vigilant. Traci Colley, Public Health Director, stated “Recent changes in state law now allow some privately owned residential pools to be rented short-term without requiring a public pool permit. However, Union County Public Health’s responsibility for regulating public pools remains unchanged.” This remains particularly pertinent given that public swimming pools, including those in hotels and fitness centers, are subject to strict local oversight to mitigate risks associated with recreational water use—such as waterborne illnesses and injuries.
Indeed, Union County is not pulling back on its commitment to safety in communal aquatic facilities. The county's rigorous permitting and inspection practices for public swimming pools are designed to enforce health and safety standards, ensuring that the quality of the water and availability of safety equipment fulfill the necessary requirements to protect swimmers. "We remain dedicated to protecting public health by actively enforcing pool safety regulations and helping prevent waterborne illnesses, injuries and accidents,” Colley told Union County's communications department.
For those thinking of taking a dip in a pool provided by a short-term rental, there are still safety measures to consider. Union County Public Health advises checking for visible safety equipment, a clear maintenance schedule, and appropriate barriers like fencing to avoid any unwanted incidents, while their pools webpage provides detailed guidelines and advice for pool owners and users for maintaining a secure environment even as legislative shifts modify the regulatory terrain concerning residential swimming pools those found through sharing economy platforms.
