As the school bells get ready to ring in a new academic year, Union County Public Health is proactively reaching out to families to ensure that their children's vaccinations are up to date before pencils hit paper in classrooms. In adherence to state law, which enforces specific immunization requirements for students entering kindergarten, the 7th grade and the 12th grade, as well as any child who may be behind on routine childhood vaccines, a strong push is being made to prevent any hitch in students' educational journeys.
Union County Public Health has launched a concerted back-to-school vaccination campaign to avert the exclusion of students from school premises, should they fail to furnish adequate vaccination documentation within the stipulated 30-day deadline following the commencement of classes. According to Union County's report, as early as Wednesday, Sept. 24, the lack of compliance could lead to students being turned away, this potential disruption in education is a scenario public health officials are striving to circumvent by expanding service hours and simplifying access to immunizations.
In an effort to accommodate varied schedules and alleviate the typically long queues during peak immunization periods, several initiatives have been put in place. As reported by Union County Public Health, these include extended clinic hours starting August 11, appointments on the day before Exclusion Day, and a full-day walk-in clinic on Exclusion Day itself, September 24, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
"In recent years, we've seen nearly four-hour wait times for patients at our walk-in Exclusion Day clinic," Maegan Trull, Public Health Nursing Supervisor, told Union County Public Health, outlining the past challenges they have faced; by moving to more flexible scheduling options and extending hours, saying, they hope to eliminate such delays and facilitate a smoother and more efficient process for families gearing up for the academic season.
