Union County has a new hero in Assistant Fire Marshal Chad Baucom, who has been awarded the Lifesaver Award for his daring rescue while on a family vacation at Litchfield Beach, South Carolina; a commendation for actions that demonstrate vigilant public service beyond the call of duty.

It was a regular day at the beach on June 18, when Baucom heard shouts for help emanating from the ocean, without thinking about his own safety he sprang into action alongside a quick-to-act bystander, they managed to haul an unconscious man onto a boogie board and brought him back to the safety of the shore – here, Baucom did not cease his brave efforts. While waiting for authorities, he and local police officers provided chest compressions, and using an AED, Baucom continued lifesaving procedures until the arrival of the paramedics and firefighters, as per Union County's release.

In a surprise ceremony held on August 1, Baucom received his award at the Emergency Services Center, an event that underscored the everyday heroes walking amongst us. "Even while off duty and on vacation with his family, Chad didn’t hesitate to take action when someone was in danger. His quick thinking and selfless response reflect the very best of our public safety professionals," County Manager Brian Matthews said in Union County's statement.

The recognition goes beyond Baucom's individual act of valor, as Fire Marshal Jon Williams notes, "As firefighters, we are always ready to respond whether we're on duty or not, this award recognizes not only Chad’s actions but his instinct to help others that defines who we are, wherever we are," capturing the ethos of first responders everywhere.
