The University of Nevada, Las Vegas has established a new artificial intelligence research center specifically designed to help the gaming industry navigate the complex challenges of digital transformation. The AI Research Hub (AiR Hub), launched through UNLV's International Gaming Institute, represents the first centralized academic initiative focused on AI's growing impact on one of Nevada's most regulated industries.

According to Vegas Inc, co-founder Kasra Ghaharian, the institute's director of research, said the AiR Hub will address critical questions reshaping the sector including how artificial intelligence is transforming gaming operations and what governance frameworks should guide AI implementation. The initiative also aims to identify which emerging technologies operators must master to stay competitive and how the sector can effectively integrate responsible AI practices with academic research.

Filling a Critical Research Gap

While scattered research around AI in gaming has existed previously, Ghaharian noted there hasn't been a central hub for coordinated study. He and AiR Hub co-founder Simo Dragicevic, an International Gaming Institute adjunct fellow, identified an opportunity to generate evidence and research that could help the industry better understand AI technology. As detailed by Vegas Inc, the timing is critical given the controversial nature of both the gambling industry and AI technology intersecting.

The research focus spans multiple operational areas, from using generative AI in back-of-house daily tasks to generating game assets for slot machines. Additionally, the hub will examine customer relationship management, player experience and engagement, plus risk management and responsible gambling initiatives including anti-money laundering, fraud detection, and sophisticated algorithms that analyze player behavioral data to identify potential addiction or problematic behavior.

Industry Partnerships and Advisory Support

According to Gaming America, representatives from Action Gaming, Axes.ai, Evoke Plc, Gaming Analytics, Kindbridge Behavioral Health, Playtech Plc, ROGA (Responsible Online Gaming Association), and Walker Digital Table Systems will serve on AiR Hub's industry advisory panel. This collaborative approach ensures the research addresses real-world applications and industry needs.

The hub's headquarters at 4505 S. Maryland Pkwy in Las Vegas places it strategically within Nevada's gaming corridor. The International Gaming Institute has provided research to more than 50 jurisdictions globally, and AiR Hub will build frameworks and tools for regulators to help them ask appropriate questions before making decisions about whether regulations need to adapt to technological changes.

Flagship Research Initiatives

Key projects include the forthcoming State of AI in Gaming report, which will serve as the sector's first annual comprehensive analysis surveying current and future use cases while indexing companies on their AI maturity. The hub recently conducted research for the Massachusetts Gaming Commission to better understand current AI applications in the industry and future possibilities, identifying four key themes in AI usage patterns.

Dragicevic noted the challenge facing the industry, explaining that it's difficult for companies and regulators to prioritize future planning when current market conditions are highly competitive and complex. Per SBC Americas, he emphasized that AI will continue having a fundamental impact on all aspects of society, and the gaming industry has significant potential to leverage AI for creating exciting new entertainment experiences.

The initiative builds on UNLV International Gaming Institute's three-decade track record of providing research-based solutions, insights, and executive education to the global gaming and gambling industry. For more information about the AI Research Hub, visit www.igiairhub.com.
