In a colorful show of solidarity and celebration, the VTA Pride Bus, bedecked with the faces of LGBTQ+ icons, takes to the streets of Santa Clara County. According to a recent post by VTA, the bus's "Unstoppable" theme resonates with the 50th anniversary of Silicon Valley Pride, depicted through pop-art graphics that mirror the uproarious vibe of the 1970s. This mobile tribute spreads a message of love, legacy, and liberation while navigating the South Bay.
Spotlighted among the celebrated figures on the wraparound artwork are staples in the LGBTQ+ and Bay Area communities, such as Angela Davis, Harvey Milk, and Ken Yeager, a tenured VTA Board member. Infused with both meaning and local color, the portrayal carries weight, marking the influence of Santa Clara County's first openly gay elected official. As mentioned in VTA's blog, Yeager, who also founded Queer Silicon Valley, has become a lodestar for countless individuals seeking to lead authentically.
Also recognized in this moving gallery is the legendary Billy DeFrank, remembered as much for his stage persona as his philanthropic spirit. A dedicated African American performer, DeFrank's financial contributions through drag supported numerous LGBTQ+ organizations and were paramount in establishing the Billy DeFrank LGBTQ+ Community Center in San José.
Each icon on the Pride Bus has made an indelible mark on the LGBTQ+ movement. Notable figures include Marsha P. Johnson, an indomitable Stonewall icon, the evocative pop artist Keith Haring, and José Sarria, whose commitment to advocacy despite being a performer and local veteran was unstinting. The list continues with luminaries such as the poet and activist Audre Lorde and the enduring voice for social change, Angela Davis. As cited by VTA, these individuals have not just shaped history but continue to inspire those fighting for a more inclusive future.
Scheduled for a special appearance, the bus will join the upcoming Silicon Valley Pride Parade on Sunday, August 31, from 10 a.m. to noon. Accompanied by a cadre of proud VTA employees, friends, and families, the bus travels not just the roads of the South Bay, but also routes paved by the very icons it celebrates.
