Wake County Sheriff's Office released an update via social media, alerting the public to a temporary road closure between Sweetwater Lane and La Costa Way, from 12:45 p.m. to 1:10 p.m., to ensure a safe and respectful procession for Deputy Ned Byrd, who lost his life in service on August 11, 2022.
During the closure, no vehicles traversed the bridge that crosses the Neuse River, providing a silent backdrop as the name of Deputy Ned P. Byrd was eternally inscribed upon it. Traffic was rerouted for the brief span of intermission in the day's bustle, as attendees of the bridge naming ceremony and compatriots from the Wake County Sheriff’s Office gathered in solemn camaraderie the original announcement detailed the road would be shut from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., but residents caught between the closures were not left stranded; they could still seek passage to their homes.
