Wake Forest is prepping for its Third Annual Mental Wellness Fair this September, targeting a compassionate conversation around mental health, and offering a plethora of resources to the community. The event, which is free and open to the public, takes place on Sept. 27 from 1-4 p.m. at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, according to an announcement from the Town of Wake Forest. Commissioner Nick Sliwinski is at the forefront of this initiative, which seeks not only to spread awareness but also to equip individuals, from children to seniors, with information about mental health services.

The fair promises an array of activities tailored for a broad audience, but the highlight is expected to be a panel discussion featuring the parents of Grayson Murray, a PGA golfer who tragically died by suicide last year, which will explore the immense pressures athletes and their families endure in a landscape where public scrutiny is unyielding and the silence around mental strife is deafening. Alongside the discourse, local organizations, agencies, and nonprofits will populate the venue as vendors, offering insights into services available in areas such as depression, suicide prevention, veteran support, and social wellness, the Town of Wake Forest reported.

The gathering is not all talk; practical support in the form of free food courtesy of the Town of Wake Forest and Wake Forest Fire Department, health screenings by Wake Med, and even free haircuts from a mobile barber will be available because sometimes, physical sustenance and care resonate as an echo of the mental succor being offered on this day. To top it off, the Northern Community Food Security Team will make sure the Ripe for Revival Mobile Market is on hand, parked and ready to serve in the Renaissance Centre lot.

The Mental Wellness Fair on September 27 is a step toward breaking the stigma around mental health. "The September 27 Mental Wellness Fair is free and open to all – whether you need help or want to know how to support those who do." Preregistration is encouraged through the Town’s online signup link, but walk-ins are also welcome, as per the Town of Wake Forest's announcement.
