The National Weather Service in Washington, D.C., is forecasting calm but shifting weather across the District and nearby areas this week, with clear skies at times but also the potential for flooding. As reported by the NWS, the D.C. area will delight in a sequence of warm, sunny days with gentle winds, only to be occasionally interrupted by potential showers as the week progresses.
Clear skies will crown the capital today, with the mercury ascending to a high near 84 degrees, a northeast breeze kicking soft at 5 mph in the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures tonight will drop to around 62 degrees with southeast winds becoming calm. On Saturday, sunny conditions are expected with a high near 85 and light south winds increasing slightly in the afternoon.
While Saturday night appears to also bask under partly cloudy serenity at a comfortable 69 degrees, the outlook for Sunday signals a shift. A 40% likelihood of showers post 2 pm mars the partly sunny skies, while a high near 86 degrees will be complimented by a consistent south wind, breezing between 5 and 8 mph. The potential for precipitation extends into Sunday night, with forecasters citing a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms amidst the robust clouds.
An advisory for hazardous weather punctuates the otherwise serene forecast. "Moderate tidal flooding is possible along sensitive shorelines along the Chesapeake Bay and tidal Potomac River through Saturday morning," warns the NWS. Specifically, a Coastal Flood Warning is in effect for Anne Arundel County through Saturday morning. Residents in these areas are urged to remain vigilant, as conditions may quickly subside into threat, even as the wind caresses the cheery countenance of the nearby Bay.
Looking ahead, the start of the new week harbors a return to mostly sunny scenes with Monday seeing a high near 84 degrees, before the night ushers in partly cloudy veils and a low around 62. The pattern of sun-dominated days and partly clouded nights is set to stretch through Thursday. The promise of dry, sunny weather paired with bearable evening chills, however, does not entirely eclipse the possibility of further tidal challenges, as moderate flooding along sensitive shorelines of the Chesapeake Bay and tidal Potomac River remains a standing caution for Saturday morning.
