The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is on the hunt for individuals with a collaborative spirit to join its Wolf Advisory Group (WAG), per an announcement on their website. The group, pivotal for guiding the state's policies on the conservation and management of wolves, currently has four openings that require filling by committed citizens ready to embark on a two-year term shaping wildlife strategies.
For those passionate about the environment and interested in the intersection where human lives meet the untamed, these positions offer a chance to make a significant input and while the candidates must exhibit an ability to work amicably with diverse viewpoints they must also work towards building consensus for the betterment of Washington's wildlife policies. Applications for the advisory group can be submitted electronically or via post, with detailed instructions provided on the WDFW's website, and the department is accepting applicants until 5 p.m. on September 15th, 2025.
Members of WAG are expected to participate in at least four two-day meetings each year, ranging from in-person gatherings to virtual sessions; travel expenses for these meetings are reimbursed by WDFW, as stated on WDFW's announcement. The opportunity is open to all members of the public, with the department highlighting an interest in individuals who can provide perspectives of particular stakeholders such as hunters, livestock producers, those with environmental concerns or conservation expertise, and other 'at large' interests.
The WAG has existed since 2013, offering diverse insight to support the state in its efforts to navigate the complexities of gray wolf preservation and management and has since become an integral part of the dialogue between conservation efforts and stakeholders' needs. The work done by the advisory group directly affects not only the wolves but also the broader ecosystems and communities; thus, the value of broad representation on the committee cannot be overstated.
