Heavy machinery and the continual hum of construction will resonate through Edgewater this weekend as contractors push to maintain the schedule for the new bridge. According to an update from the City of Everett, work will proceed on Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21, with noise expected between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Residents are advised to prepare for the unavoidable soundtrack of progress as the area's infrastructure receives its long-awaited overhaul.
The highlight of this weekend's work involves a significant piece of equipment known as an oscillator, which contractors are using to relentlessly twist oversized metal casings into the earth. This process forms the molds for what will become the new bridge's columns. In a display of engineering coordination, these casings are then held in place, as reported by the City of Everett's official alert, until a rebar cage is lowered in and concrete is poured from the bottom up to solidify the structure’s spine.
The alert included a photo from earlier this month showing a 100-foot-long rebar cage being delivered. These large steel frames are key to building strong, stable columns for the new bridge, as per the City of Everett.
