In an effort to curb impaired driving incidents, the West Sacramento Police Department is slated to conduct a DUI checkpoint tomorrow. This enforcement is scheduled for today, August 14, and will run from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. The checkpoint's location is strategically chosen based on areas that have experienced a high incidence of DUI-related crashes in the past. The key objective, as stated by the department, is to promote safe driving conditions for all.
As a reminder to motorists, the West Sacramento Police Department notes that driving under the influence extends beyond alcohol consumption. In a social media announcement, drivers are warned that the effects of prescription and over-the-counter medications can also impair driving abilities. Moreover, driving while high on marijuana remains illegal and subject to legal consequences.
As per the West Sacramento Police Department post, individuals apprehended for a first-time DUI can anticipate significant repercussions. "Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license." This hefty penalty is intended to serve both as a deterrent and a wake-up call for those considering driving while impaired.
With these operations, the West Sacramento Police Department urges the community to plan ahead to ensure a safe journey home. This initiative has been made possible through funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The overarching message to the public: "Plan ahead. Get home safe. Don’t drive impaired."
