The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is implementing an increased law enforcement presence on trails and routes this Labor Day weekend, targeting ATV and UTV riders. The initiative is part of the "Think Smart Before You Start" safety campaign, designed to curb the dangerous behavior contributing to numerous fatalities in the state, as reported by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
With 27 fatal UTV/ATV crashes occurring in Wisconsin in 2025, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and county sheriff's offices are joining forces to patrol popular riding areas. A significant number of these tragedies involved riders who were not using seatbelts or helmets, and oftentimes alcohol and excessive speed were involved. According to a release by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Lt. Jake Holsclaw, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources off-highway vehicle administrator, emphasizes, "These campaigns have been an effective tool for us to work with our partners and address risky behaviors that lead to crashes."
Officers on patrol will be closely watching for violations such as operating while intoxicated (OWI), speeding and careless operation. The enforcement is aimed not just at prevention of infractions but also at educating riders on the importance of safety measures. "Anyone who is riding in a UTV needs to have their seatbelt fastened. If you’re under 18, you’re required to wear a helmet," Holsclaw stressed in the campaign's materials, as stated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources urges ATV and UTV riders to learn the rules and take a safety course on their website. These resources help riders stay safe and responsible on the trails. The goal is to lower the number of accidents and deaths, which have been a serious issue in the state this year.
