A 13-year-old boy was apprehended outside Duquesne Elementary School in Allegheny County with a firearm, according to reports from the City of Duquesne Police Department. The incident, which took place during the school's dismissal time, raised immediate concern among school officials and law enforcement. WTAE reported that the young individual, a former student of the district, was spotted standing across the street from the school with his hand inside a fanny pack, which contained the weapon.
Police confronted the teen, who initially fled the scene but was later caught. The individual was wearing a medical glove while holding the gun inside the fanny pack. No injuries were reported in the incident, and the police secured a firearm. Despite the seriousness of the charges, which include possession of a weapon on school property, Allegheny County facilities initially lacked the capacity to detain the teen, leading to his transfer to an out-of-state juvenile detention facility. "The City of Duquesne Police Department would like to commend the Duquesne Elementary Security team for their quick recognition of the suspicious activity, their detailed description of the juvenile actor, and their willingness to aid in the investigation," reported CBS News.
The City of Duquesne School District Superintendent, Dr. Sue Mariani, indicated that the boy was known to the school but had withdrawn from the district the previous year due to behavioral issues. An increased police presence was reported by school officials, ensuring the safety of the school community during drop-offs and dismissals following the incident.
