
In a somber revelation from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, a 14-year-old has been arrested and charged with the murder of a teenager, a stark reminder of the violence that can permeate even the youngest demographics. The suspect, Keyon Byrd, who is not even of legal age to drive, surrendered to authorities regarding the death of 18-year-old Marlon Lane.
According to the details released on Jacksonville Sheriff's Office's Facebook page, the tragic incident unfolded at an apartment complex on Labelle Street on the Westside when officers responded to a shooting on Wednesday, September 10. Lane was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds, after which first responders from JFRD rushed him to the hospital, unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
In the wake of Lane's death, Sheriff's Homicide Unit detectives, together with the Crime Scene Unit and the State Attorney’s Office, acted swiftly to identify Byrd as the suspect. The young suspect turned himself in on Friday, the day an arrest warrant was issued. "He is now behind bars," the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reported, showcasing a commitment to holding individuals accountable, irrespective of age.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office took this opportunity to relay a critical plea to the community, emphasizing parental involvement in the lives of their youth, "We can’t stress this enough: parents and family members, please get involved in your children’s lives."
