A 15-year-old boy is now facing charges following an incident at Whitehaven High School during a football game. The altercation involved a Memphis Shelby County School (MSCS) officer and took place on Friday around 8:35 p.m., as reported by WREG. According to the MSCS officer, the situation escalated when the teenager and several others allegedly tried to start a fight, leading to their expulsion from the game.
Despite efforts by the officers to remove them from the premises, the 15-year-old reportedly refused to leave. It was in the ensuing confrontation that the officer claimed to have been pushed by the teen. "The officer says he immediately took the teen to the ground," WREG detailed the officer's response to the boy's action. The young suspect, who at the time was already on a 10-day out-of-school suspension, quickly regained his composure, appearing to once again engage in a combative posture before being subdued and handcuffed by the officer.
Action News 5 added that the boy was charged with criminal trespass in addition to assault against a law enforcement officer. The Memphis Police Department (MPD) confirmed the charges following the altercation during the Whitehaven vs. Germantown football game. The specifics of the physical engagement, as per the account from the MPD, align closely with those provided in the officer's narrative from the MSCS.
The confrontation did not lead to any significant injury as the teenager "declined medical attention," based on the police statement. This detail, among others, was confirmed by FOX13 Memphis: "The teen declined medical attention," noted in their report on the incident. While the 15-year-old's name has not been released due to his age, his actions have now escalated to a legal issue that extends beyond the school's disciplinary measures. He is charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and criminal trespass, according to the MPD.
