On Saturday, the U.S. Border Patrol Chief for the El Paso Sector, Walter Slosar, announced the arrival of 500 National Guard soldiers to assist in the border mission, a move aimed at bolstering security at the Texas border. Chief Slosar's announcement, detailed in a social media post, was echoed by multiple local news outlets, providing insight into the scope and intentions behind the deployment. KTSM reported that soldiers from the Texas Military Department are expected to work alongside Border Patrol agents.
According to Slosar's post, these National Guard troops are not only bringing in additional manpower but are also equipped with new technology and additional equipment to shore up the border infrastructure. With a focus on real-time tracking of illegal entries and intelligence sharing, the aim is to enhance the operational efficacy of border security. "Landed, equipped, and deployed" was the succinct summary from Chief Slosar, offering a snapshot of the mission's immediacy and preparedness, highlighting the efforts to keep the border secure, as obtained by KVIA.
In addition to infrastructure tasks, a portion of the deployed soldiers will undergo training and deputization under Title 8. This certification will authorize them to detain individuals attempting to cross the border illegally. Claudio A. Herrera Baeza, U.S. Border Patrol El Paso Sector Public Affairs Officer, confirmed this development, asserting that these soldiers "are going to be trained and deputized under Title 8 for them to be able to detain individuals crossing illegally," according to KVIA.
The operational enhancement comes with a stern warning to potential illegal border crossers. The social media post from Chief Slosar carried a clear message: "If you come here illegally, you will be arrested. You are going to be removed. You are going to be prosecuted, despite what smugglers are telling people," as reported by KTSM. The reinforcement of border security efforts in El Paso demonstrates a tangible escalation in the measures being taken to manage and control illegal border crossings and trafficking activities.
Sharing intelligence across borders and in "real time" suggests an international dimension to the enhanced security operation, reflecting the complex nature of border management. This deployment is part of a broader strategy utilizing the "long arm of American justice," which, as mentioned, is never too short to reach out and touch somebody, a point of emphasis in the shared mission of the National Guard and Border Patrol, as KFOX-TV noted in their coverage.
