Adams County has teamed up with Anythink Libraries to crown Aerik Francis as the new Adams County Poet Laureate, a title that carries the honor of representing the county's literary voice. In a joint statement, the appointment of Francis, who will hold the title for two years, is a nod to the importance of poetry in community-building and celebrating a diversity of voices. Francis' selection was announced following a thorough application and jury selection process, drawing candidates deeply rooted in Colorado's literary scene with proven track records in published works and community engagement.
The public is invited to an inaugural reception for the new laureate, slated for November 6, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., at the Adams County Government Center. Lasting an hour and a half, the event promises attendees a first look at Francis' inaugural performance in their new role. In a gesture of hospitality and to foster a communal spirit, light refreshments and appetizers will be served. Those wishing to attend can RSVP through a provided link. The details of the event, including the venue address and RSVP instructions, were detailed in an announcement on the Adams County website.
Aerik Francis comes to the position adorned with accolades and deep ties to Coloradan poetry and educational communities. They have shepherded youth at the Lighthouse Writers Workshop, coordinated events with Slam Nuba, and breathed life into open mics at Denver's RedLine Contemporary Art Center, among other initiatives. "Poetry is more than words on a page—it’s alchemy; it’s a catalyst for action," said Francis, as per Adams County. Their tenure as laureate is set to kick off in early 2026 with a program titled “Conversations,” which aims to curate spaces for dialogue among community members.
The collaboration between Adams County and Anythink Libraries in creating the Poet Laureate program is a show of commitment to advancing the arts and engaging the local community in cultural discussions. "Adams County is proud to support the arts and elevate voices that reflect the richness and diversity of our community," Lynn Baca, Chair of the Adams County Board of Commissioners, stated, as obtained by Adams County, anticipating the inspiring effect Francis is expected to have on residents of all ages. The executive vision behind this collaboration was further highlighted by Mark Fink, Executive Director of Anythink Libraries, who underscored the role of art in igniting imagination and sparking conversations, expecting Francis to enrich the region's cultural tapestry. Their integrated vision aims to fuse the artistic prowess and visionary outlook of Francis, augmenting the county's cultural offerings.
