Chugging along innovation's track, Amtrak has rolled out its new high-speed Next Gen Acela trains, connecting passengers from Washington D.C. to Boston in sleeker style—if not speed. The trains feature updated interiors and technology aimed at improving the overall experience. However, despite reaching speeds of up to 160 mph on certain tracks, the travel time hasn't seen a cut, maintaining a journey length from D.C. to Boston akin to the older Acela models, according to a recent review by Business Traveler USA.

Adding a sartorial spin to the launch, Amtrak’s "trak suits" merch designed by New York School of Design students is making tracks in the fashion world. Sold as both practical and couture wear, the designs riff off the new train's aesthetic, with winning designer Anastasiia Lukinskaia incorporating the Acela train pattern into her pants design. Jessica Davidson of Digital and Brand Marketing for Amtrak told ABC7NY, "They are able to take the timeless staple of a tracksuit and apply Amtrak branding and think about the future of style and comfort that our trains offer."

The runway show featuring these designs celebrated innovation not just in transportation but in fashion, weaving together the two sectors in a collaborative display of student talent and corporate branding. Lukinskaia's design, complete with a built-in sleep mask for long rides, foretells the diversity of Amtrak's approach to travel comfort—and will soon be available for purchase online.

In terms of actual ride quality, Business Traveler USA's review notes the new trains offer a smoother and quieter experience, with tilting technology and a fresh cafe car look among the highlights. However, the NextGen's improvements in seating comfort in Business Class received a rather lukewarm reception. Passengers might have found their seats sliding forward to create an illusion of recline rather than experiencing a true tilt-back relaxation, and power outlets positioned at calf level might test one's yoga skills.

Amtrak president Roger Harris praised the trains as state-of-the-art and American-made, noting that the wireless internet upgrade has provided noticeably better connectivity. The improvements reflect gradual changes in Amtrak's high-speed service, which also includes new branded items like the "trak suit," as reported by ABC7NY.
