Apple has just announced the newest additions to its iPhone lineup: the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and an ultra-thin model now known as the iPhone Air. The unveiling took place today at the company's campus in Cupertino, with better cameras and increased battery life promised across the board. The Pro models boast impressive specs with a starting price of $1,100 for the iPhone 17 Pro, a $100 uptick from the previous generation. According to AP News, the iPhone Air will sell at $1,000, mirroring last year's Pro model price point. Meanwhile, the basic iPhone 17 holds steady at $800, and the Pro Max sits at the high end at $1,200.
The price hike for the Pro comes as Apple seeks to absorb pressure from the ongoing global trade war, which has thrust CEO Tim Cook into the center of the tariff tumult. President Donald Trump's administration continues to lobby for U.S.-based manufacturing of iPhones, a demand that has major implications for the tech giant as their primary production centers remain overseas. Yet, Cook's diplomatic overtures and investment pledges have, for now, tempered some tariff impacts. "We are raising the bar again," Cook boasted, in a statement that relates to a brand legacy of industry leadership, per AP News.
The iPhone 17 Pro models feature a host of upgrades. The A19 Pro chip enhances performance while the Ceramic Shield 2 offers superior durability. These features were detailed by Apple's newsroom, where it was noted that both models sport a trio of 48MP Fusion cameras, the longest optical zoom yet on an iPhone, and advanced video capabilities. The creative potential for users appears to have taken a significant leap with these newest smartphones. Apple SVP of Worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak, said, "iPhone 17 Pro sets a new standard for the smartphone industry and is a massive upgrade for our most demanding users."
Despite the price shift, the response to the new iPhone range has been a mixed bag. Apple's shares dipped nearly 2% following the announcement. Still, the modifications to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, including the touted "Center Stage" option on the front camera, offering a wider field of view for landscape selfies, are emblematic of Apple's desire to keep innovating in a competitive market. The eSIM feature provides added security and convenience, allowing users to manage travel eSIMs easily and benefit from larger battery capacities.
Ideas of environmental responsibility were not left behind, with Apple committing to using 30% recycled content in the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. This falls within Apple's broader goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. This comes in addition to various new accessories designed to complement the phones with tailored cases, straps, and Apple's MagSafe technology.
