The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona has implemented a significant immigration-related operation, resulting in charges against 274 individuals for various offenses during the week of September 13 to September 19. The sweep was part of Operation Take Back America, and included cases of illegal re-entry, unlawful entry, alien smuggling, and even an incident of assaulting a federal officer.
According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, the cases encompassed charging 108 individuals who re-entered the United States illegally, and 150 aliens were charged for making an unlawful entry. To underscore, the authorities' drive, one individual was charged for allegedly assaulting a federal officer. The law enforcement initiative was supported by ICE, Border Patrol, DEA, FBI, USMS, and ATF.
One of the highlighted cases involved Jessica Isabel Perez, who was caught at the San Luis Port of Entry on September 12 with two children, one of whom she presented with inconsistent identification. A criminal complaint was lodged against Perez on several charges, including Conspiracy to Transport an Illegal Alien, and Aggravated Identity Theft.
Another case was that of Juan Raul Angulo-Angulo, a citizen of Mexico, accused of guiding two individuals through the desert to enter the U.S. unlawfully. Dressed in camouflage clothing and using carpet booties to minimize tracks, Angulo-Angulo, alongside the two other subjects, all lacked lawful authority to be present in the U.S. They were discovered about 20 miles south of Tacna, Arizona, by Border Patrol agents.
The operation is aligned with the Justice Department's broader aim to vigorously enforce immigration laws and disrupt criminal activities linked to illegal immigration. A criminal complaint, as the release specifies, "is a formal accusation of criminal conduct," and defendants maintain their presumption of innocence pending legal proceedings, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office release.
