A man wielding a gun was fatally shot by Los Angeles Police Department officers in the North Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, after witnesses reported him waving the weapon and a beer bottle. The incident transpired at approximately 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday beneath the 405 Freeway at Parthenia Street and Orion Avenue, KTLA reports.
Responding to calls from the community, police encountered the individual believed to be armed. Upon refusal to comply with police orders and appearing to move towards the officers while armed, the police engaged, ultimately resulting in the suspect's death, as CBS News Los Angeles details. Despite the chaos, there were no other injuries reported from the confrontation.
The identity of the man has not been released, and it remains unclear whether he fired his weapon at the officers. Officers at the scene were seen securing a handgun that was later collected as evidence, ABC7 notes. The investigation is ongoing to understand the full context of the police shooting.
"There are fewer violent crimes being committed in the city, and yet, we’re seeing a greater number of officer-involved shootings." LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell remarked to NBC LA. He further expressed concern over the rise in such incidents compared to the previous year, highlighting that many involved individuals allegedly carried guns or replicas.
