Atlanta's Mayor Andre Dickens, along with the City of Atlanta Department of Parks & Recreation, has honored the lifetime of service provided by the late Councilmember Ivory Lee Young Jr. The city celebrated his contributions with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at Rodney Cook Sr. Park. According to a city press release, the ceremony took place yesterday, attended by city officials, community leaders, and members of Young's family.
Councilmember Young's widow, Shalise Steele-Young, alongside Councilmember Byron Amos and Department of Parks & Recreation Commissioner Justin Cutler, attended the event to pay tribute to Young's significant achievements. Young served on the Atlanta City Council from 2002 until his passing in 2018, where he played a pivotal role in major city projects, including the development of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The public was invited to join in reflecting on his impact on the Vine City, English Avenue, and Washington Park neighborhoods.
Rodney Cook Sr. Park, located at 270 Vine Street NW in the heart of Vine City, has been selected as the site of the event. Media outlets have been invited to RSVP for coverage.
