The city reels from the aftermath as Brandon Thompson is newly charged with first-degree murder following a violent episode near Zilker Park earlier this month. Already steeped in charges of attempted capital murder of a peace officer and burglary of a residence, Thompson's rap sheet extended to include murder after the September 10th altercation that left one woman brain-dead and an Austin Police officer wounded. KXAN reports Thompson, 30, remains incarcerated at Travis County Jail.
Details on the shocking events to emerge in succinct fashion: Officer Adam Reinhart, while performing a routine curfew patrol, came across a stolen vehicle set for towing. What began as a watch over the towed car soon escalated into a deadly confrontation when Thompson and Kay Smith, later identified as his girlfriend, approached claiming the car as theirs. The early morning tranquility was broken when Thompson allegedly shot Smith in the head and then turned his gun on Officer Reinhart. Despite the swift response by police, including a manhunt involving SWAT and K9 units, the suspect managed to avoid capture for nearly four hours. The pandemonium culminated when Thompson forcibly entered a home on Homedale Drive and was subsequently shot by the homeowner, FOX 7 Austin details.
According to FOX 7 Austin, APD's bodycam footage showed the grim reality of the scene, with Officer Reinhart uttering "Come out of the woods, come out of the woods real quick, come over here, you’re detained, you are not free to go," prior to violence erupting. Although critically injured, Reinhart, a six-year department veteran, is expected to make a recovery. Sadly, Smith was pronounced brain-dead the day of the shooting and later taken off life support.
The community's safety became a paramount concern as tensions rose, and to moved quickly to ensure the suspect's capture. A communication error due to system maintenance and an individual's premature lifting of a shelter-in-place order brought forth concerns from local representatives. In light of the events, Council Member Ryan Alter noted the necessity to "err on the side of caution," suggesting a protocol where "two or three people have to give the go-ahead before" the cancellation of emergency measures, according to KXAN.
As inquiries continue, APD urges anyone with information to step forward and contact the department or submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers program. With Thompson's latest charge escalating the case's severity, Austin's law enforcement and residents alike seek to swiftly mend the fractures caused by this tragic series of events and to bring closure to a community rattled by violence and chaos.
