The City of Avondale has officially designated September as Suicide Prevention Month, a move aimed to shine a light on mental health and inspire community-wide initiatives to address this critical issue. In a city council meeting on September 8, Mayor Mike Pineda took the lead by issuing a proclamation to mark the importance of suicide prevention. This proclamation was handed to a representative from Southwest Behavioral and Health Services, an agency deeply involved in providing counseling and crisis intervention, according to a report from the City of Avondale's official news release.
Avondale's approach to grappling with the complexities of mental health will not solely to rest on one-time gestures. Throughout the month, it will roll out a series of educational events and workshops dedicated to promoting awareness and preventative strategies targeted at suicide. In addition, city employees have been spurred to wear yellow pins—an emblem of solidarity—and engage in conversations on mental well-being. Information and resources on the topic will be disseminated among the staff, aiming to equip them with knowledge and tools necessary for action and support.
"Many people experiencing mental health issues hesitate to seek help due to fear of judgment. We all have the power to be someone’s lifeline by recognizing the warning signs and connecting them with resources," Avondale City Manager, Ron Corbin, said in a City of Avondale statement emphasizing the city's commitment to mitigating mental health stigma and supporting individuals who are struggling.
As reported by the City of Avondale, suicide holds a grim ranking as the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 10 to 34 in the United States. With the city bracing to directly confront this issue, residents are encouraged to keenly seek out support services available at the Arizona Complete Health Avondale Resource Center. Moreover, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached by calling or texting 988, ensuring that assistance is always a mere phone call away, at any hour, every day of the week.
