A tragic incident unfolded on Interstate 10 in St. John the Baptist Parish, claiming the life of a young Baton Rouge woman and leaving another seriously injured. Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to the scene of a multi-vehicle crash near milepost 210 on Tuesday, September 23, shortly before 11 pm, according to an announcement made by the Louisiana State Police on their Louisiana State Police news page.
The initial investigation suggested that a GMC Yukon, having entered the interstate the wrong way from US 51 in Laplace, collided head-on with a Nissan Altima traveling in the correct, westbound direction. Both vehicles caught fire upon impact. The incident claimed the soul of 21-year-old Patricia Saidu, who succumbed to her devastating injuries at the scene. Investigators have yet to determine whether the drivers were using restraints, as both the cause of the accident and impairment are still under investigation.
While the driver of the wrong-way GMC suffered serious injuries and received treatment in a nearby hospital, the state of their recovery remains unknown. The local community has been shaken by this tragic loss, as expressions of grief and calls for increased road safety echo through the parish. "Troopers wish to remind motorists always to make responsible choices when driving," the Louisiana State Police emphasized, outlining strategies to avoid impairment, fatigue, and distractions.
