The Bay Area Lyme Foundation is taking a significant leap into the business side of beating Lyme disease by launching the first impact investment fund focused on the condition. Named Bay Area Lyme Ventures, this new initiative aims to tackle the lack of support for companies and entrepreneurs crafting medical breakthroughs for those affected by tick-borne ailments. Aces Diagnostics and LymeAlert have been announced as the first recipients of the fund's investments, signaling a move to bridge the gap between research and real-world solutions.
Linda Giampa, the former head of the Bay Area Lyme Foundation and founder of Lyme Ventures, underscored the necessity of this bold move. "There is an extreme scarcity of support for entrepreneurs and companies developing accurate solutions for patients and clinicians in tick-borne disease," Giampa stated in an announcement. Lyme Ventures is poised to bolster the work of promising tools such as Aces Diagnostics' LymeSeek, which is said to offer an impressive 90% accuracy rate in early and disseminated Lyme disease detection, and LymeAlert's user-friendly, at-home tick test for both humans and pets.
The Bay Area Lyme Foundation, which has thus far granted over $30 million towards research, sees Lyme Ventures as a natural extension of its efforts. The new fund has targeted a $5 million investment into market-ready solutions by 2027. The proceeds from these venture investments will, in turn fuel additional research projects under the Bay Area Lyme Foundation banner. Parallel to this financial commitment stands the support lent to companies aiming to translate scientific discoveries into tangible advancements for those grappling with the disease.
Emily Fairbairn, an early supporter and funder of Lyme Ventures, touched on the significance of this endeavor via the Bay Area Lyme Foundation release: "After more than a decade of funding cutting-edge academic research through Bay Area Lyme Foundation’s efforts, Lyme Ventures is opening a door for us to now translate those breakthroughs into real world solutions—offering answers, hope, and healing to patients who have suffered for years from Lyme disease and its coinfections." The impact of Lyme Ventures could revolutionize the diagnostic landscape, providing clarity and options for treatment where confusion and frustration often reign.
For Aces Diagnostics, a long-time research partner of the foundation, Lyme Ventures' support is a game-changer. Chief Executive Officer Tammy Crawford highlighted the struggle to secure funding for projects like LymeSeek, emphasizing the importance of the partnership to bring their "accurate, research-driven solutions" to those in need. LymeAlert, on its part, views the investment as a reinforcement of its mission to empower early detection and timely intervention. "We are honored to receive support from Bay Area Lyme Ventures," Erin Dawicki, co-founder and CEO of LymeAlert, told the Bay Area Lyme Foundation. "Their investment aims to help us bring the world’s first at-home tick test to more communities."
