The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is set to notably streamline its operations in southern Minnesota with the development of a new regional office and laboratory in Mankato. The initiative, funded by the state legislature, aims to provide closer and more efficient investigative, laboratory, and training services to the area.
Currently, when a crime occurs, the BCA agents and forensic scientists based in St. Paul have to drive extensively, often hundreds of miles, to reach crime scenes. This commute not only consumes time but also delays the critical process of justice. The need to rapidly respond is paramount, and the upcoming facility is designed to be a catalyst for this urgency. According to a statement released by the official BCA announcement, the new Mankato location is predicted to cut response time by several hours in some instances.
St. Peter Police Chief Matt Grochow highlighted the tangible benefits of such an establishment, stating, “It will eliminate the three-hour round-trip commute to deliver electronics, narcotics and other items that need to be tested.” Local law enforcement agencies hitherto bear the brunt of these logistical hurdles, whether by embarking on lengthy drives or dealing with the complexity of mailing evidence, which can also impact the chain of custody. Grochow added, “Yes, some items are currently mailed but being able to deliver them directly just makes for a cleaner chain of custody and obviously this eliminates fees for shipping items via certified mail.”
The forthcoming 56,000 square foot facility won't only be about housing 50 agents, forensic scientists, support staff, and a crime scene team—it's also about ramping up the capacity for justice and public safety. The BCA Superintendent Drew Evans expounded upon this by stating, "While we’ve always served the entire state of Minnesota, this new facility in Mankato will be a regional asset providing southern Minnesota law enforcement agencies with more convenient access to the tools and services that will aid their investigations." With specialized training opportunities and direct access to tools like the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), the facility aims to become a beacon of progress in the local law enforcement landscape.
The facility's impact is also economic, promising to generate new jobs in the Mankato region. With an eye on the local community, the BCA has begun outreach efforts like attending college career events and job fairs ahead of the anticipated opening. The site at 2350 Bassett Drive is slated for groundbreaking this fall and is expected to be operational by early 2027. Local agencies look set to benefit immeasurably from the additional resources in evidence analysis, particularly in accelerating processes such as DNA testing in urgent cases.
