A Bexar County Sheriff's Office deputy has been placed under arrest following accusations of assaulting a family member, as detailed in records from the Bexar County jail. Benjamin Ramos III, age 40, is facing a Class A misdemeanor charge for assault causing bodily injury to a family member, KSAT reports. The San Antonio Police Department responded to a call on Sunday evening at a home located in the 300 block of Glendale Avenue, where they learned of the alleged altercation.
The confrontation began with an argument over Ramos' ex-girlfriend showing up to a boxing event both he and his current wife attended, this argument quickly escalated, as indicated in statements to the police the victim alleged Ramos used force against her, first pushing her collarbone with a closed fist which resulted in her necklace breaking and falling to the ground, and then striking her left temple area with significant force, according to accounts in the police records pulled by both KSAT and FOX San Antonio.
Additional punches were allegedly thrown at her arms as she attempted to protect her face, resulting in noticeable injuries, including swelling, bruising, and a broken blood vessel in her left eye. Ramos had fled before authorities arrived after contacting the police from another location, he filed a report, and under questioning from police, he claimed the woman had struck him as he tried to leave the home and defuse the situation, a report from FOX San Antonio indicated, though no visible injuries were apparent on Ramos during his interview with the San Antonio Police Department.
“Those who cannot follow the law have no business enforcing the law," Sheriff Javier Salazar stated, a sentiment echoed by both KSAT and FOX San Antonio; in light of the arrest, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office has initiated an administrative investigation which will run concurrently with the criminal investigation by the SAPD, Ramos has been with the BCSO since 2005, working as a bailiff in the Law Enforcement Bureau Judicial Services Division, and this incident marks him as the 11th deputy facing arrest this year.
