A traffic incident in Pacific Beach resulted in serious injuries for a bicyclist yesterday. According to a San Diego Police Department press release, the 57-year-old male cyclist was struck by a vehicle after he rode into an intersection and failed to observe a stop sign. The collision occurred at the crossroads of Ingraham Street and Oliver Avenue, a busy section in the coastal neighborhood noted for its attraction to tourists and locals alike.
The events unfolded when the cyclist, traveling eastbound on Oliver Avenue, entered the intersection without stopping and was broadsided by a northbound Mazda CX-5. The impact knocked the man to the ground in front of the vehicle. In what appears to be a panicked response, the 31-year-old female driver exited the car without engaging the park gear, causing the Mazda to roll over the fallen cyclist. The woman then attempted to re-enter the car. She unintentionally pressed the accelerator, further exacerbating the accident by propelling the vehicle to collide with a nearby curb and metal gate. The chain of events leading up to the injury highlights the potential for chaos when traffic rules are accidentally not observed and safety protocols are overlooked in an emergency.
The bicyclist suffered multiple fractured ribs from the incident. However, the police have confirmed that driving under the influence was not a factor in this accident. The San Diego Police Department's Traffic Division took charge of the investigation. Injuries of this nature in traffic accidents pose a significant risk of long-term implications for the victims and spotlight the importance of vigilance and adherence to traffic signs and regulations for all road users.
