The National Park Service has partnered with the Back Country Horsemen of Big South Fork to upgrade equestrian facilities at the Station Camp Campground in Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area. The project will replace aging metal horse tie-stalls with new pipe panel corrals, improving safety and functionality for visitors camping with horses.
According to a statement obtained by the National Park Service, these improvements are not a wild gallop into the unknown. A prototype corral installed last year proved effective, leading to plans to gradually replace all 10 corrals at Station Camp. The effort won’t stop there—Bear Creek Campground is also scheduled for similar improvements this winter.
Station Camp Campground, established in 1993, has long served both equestrian and non-equestrian visitors with its 24 campsites. After more than three decades of use, the upgrades go beyond simple maintenance. They’re aimed at enhancing the experience for today’s campers—whether arriving with horses or hiking gear—by making the site more comfortable and welcoming for all who explore the backcountry. "We are delighted to have the Back Country Horsemen of Big South Fork volunteer with the park and helping us to provide an improved campground experience for our equestrian visitors," Superintendent Niki Stephanie Nicholas said, as noted by the National Park Service.
