Earlier this morning, Beacon Hill was shaken by the sound of gunfire after Boston Police confronted a naked man wielding a large knife. Officers were summoned to 97 Mount Vernon St. following a 911 call reporting a break-in at the restaurant, 1928 Beacon Hill. According to a statement obtained by WCVB, Taylor Pacifico called 911 to report that the man had shattered the restaurant's front door and was "smashing plates and going crazy in there."
Upon arrival, Boston Police encountered the suspect in a back alley, where attempts to subdue him with a Taser proved fruitless, as described by Boston Police Department Superintendent Paul McLaughlin in an interview. Forced to escalate their response, "officers then discharged their department issued firearms multiple times, striking the individual," McLaughlin said. The suspect was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and in line with standard protocol, the officers involved were also taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Details regarding the exact number of shots fired have yet to be confirmed.
The incident promptly sparked concern among Beacon Hill residents, unaccustomed to such disturbances in their typically tranquil neighborhood. "Unreal. It wouldn't happen in this neighborhood," one resident expressed to WCVB, conveying a sentiment of shock over the morning's events. According to WCVB, the names of the man and the officers involved in the shooting have not been released, and police are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
In a show of gratitude to the rapid response of the officers, an spokesperson for 1928 Beacon Hill released a statement, stating, "The Boston Police Department took quick action to apprehend a severely disturbed person who broke into the restaurant this morning." The owner of 1928 Beacon Hill, Kristin Jenkins, told CBS News that the restaurant is her "baby" and that she is devastated about the incident. Neighbors, meanwhile, shared their disbelief and concern to the press. Robin Martin told CBS News how scenes of such a nature are not typical for their area, adding "I did hear the police officer say 'We're going to save your life.' And so that brought me a bit of comfort that the person who was shot was hopefully going to be OK in the end." The investigation remains active, with the restaurant cooperating with authorities.
