According to the documents, an unauthorized third party gained access to Boyd's internal information technology systems. The filings revealed that while the incident did result in the exfiltration of employee data and information on a limited number of other individuals, the company expects no material impact on its operations or financial standing, as reported by News3LV.
In their response to the incident, Boyd Gaming stated, "Upon detecting the incident, the Company promptly took steps to respond to the incident with the assistance of leading external cybersecurity experts and in cooperation with federal law enforcement authorities," with this statement included in both SEC filings obtained by News3LV and FOX5Vegas. Individuals whose data may have been compromised in the breach are being notified by the company. Boyd Gaming, a prominent name in the Las Vegas casino scene with properties such as Main Street Station, Suncoast, and The Orleans, now becomes one of the latest in a series of casinos to confront cybersecurity challenges.
The cyberattack comes as a reminder of the increasing focus on cybersecurity in the casino industry, with MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment having faced similar issues in past years. Last week, a juvenile was taken into custody in relation to the network intrusions that have affected the sector, though there has been no direct link established with the Boyd incident.
Boyd Gaming officials have sought to reassure stakeholders, indicating in the SEC filings that the company's "comprehensive cybersecurity insurance policy" is expected to defray costs associated with the attack, and the subsequent investigations. "As of the date of this filing, the Company believes that the incident will not have a material adverse effect on the Company’s financial condition or results of operations," officials stated, and this sentiment echoed in FOX5Vegas's coverage.
