Residents of Brighton have a unique opportunity to participate in a community service event dedicated to preserving and understanding local ecology. The city is inviting volunteers to a BioBlitz at Erger’s Pond located at Ken Mitchell Open Space, 889 Kinglet Court. This activity is set for Sunday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon, and aims to engage participants in a morning filled with nature, science, and exploration.

Working alongside the Open Space team and the Butterfly Pavilion experts, volunteers will have the chance to contribute to ongoing restoration efforts. Previously, the Open Space team has undertaken projects that included reseeding areas affected by fire and bringing in goats to graze on invasive weeds. During the BioBlitz event, community members, equipped with the iNaturalist app, will aid in cataloging the diverse flora and fauna of the area. According to the City of Brighton, part of the task is collecting valuable information about Erger's ecosystem.

Following the BioBlitz, another event centered on environmental stewardship will take place at Bromley Farms, located at 1594 E. Bromley Lane on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon. The Butterfly Pavilion team will guide volunteers in enhancing the Pollinator Garden. Those who join will engage in planting native species, mulching, and removing invasive weeds alongside gardeners of varying expertise. This hands-on experience serves to nurture the crucial pollinator-friendly habitats within the community's green spaces.

Participants of these community service days are advised to wear long-sleeved tops, pants, and sturdy shoes, and bring work gloves along with a water bottle. The city has committed to providing additional gloves, garden tools, and the necessary plants, as well as offering training, drinking water, and snacks for volunteers. The intent is to educate while actively contributing to the conservation and beautification of Brighton's natural areas.
