Brooklyn Park has announced details for its annual Recycling Week, scheduled for September 22 through 26. Residents are asked to place recycling carts at the curb by 6:30 a.m. on collection days, with crews working until 6:00 p.m., according to the City of Brooklyn Park.

Carts must be placed at least three feet from mailboxes, garbage containers, or other carts. They should not block the street and must be located on the driveway or boulevard with the handle facing away from the street, city officials noted.

When preparing materials, residents are reminded not to use plastic or paper bags. Plastic bags are not opened at sorting facilities and should be placed in the trash. Paper bags often get stuck inside the collection truck during compaction and cannot be processed. The city advises placing all recyclables loosely in the cart to ensure proper collection and sorting.

To help residents stay informed, Brooklyn Park offers the HRG Recycling app. The tool provides service alerts, a searchable database to confirm recyclability of items, and support in multiple languages, including English, French, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese. According to the city, the app is available for download on mobile devices.

The city emphasized that these steps are part of a broader effort to improve sustainability and reduce contamination in recycling loads. Officials encourage residents to follow placement and preparation rules to ensure collected items can be processed efficiently.

While the city is highlighting recycling during the designated week, officials stressed that proper disposal practices are an ongoing responsibility. Brooklyn Park noted that following guidelines throughout the year helps maintain a cleaner community and supports the city’s long-term environmental goals.
