Residents of Brooklyn Park have two opportunities this week to contribute to a cleaner environment and support those in need. For starters, make sure to roll out your recycling carts for the weekly collection no later than 6:30 a.m., remembering that crews work diligently until 6:00 p.m. to complete their rounds. A reminder from the city — keep your carts properly spaced, a safe three feet from mailboxes or other carts, with the cart handle facing your driveway or the boulevard, not the street.

In an effort to simplify the recycling process and improve the quality of materials collected, the city has issued specific instructions. Crucially, all recyclable materials must be placed loose in the cart, as plastic bags are disposed of unopened and paper bags often stick to the sides during compaction, thus complicating the separation process at the sorting facility. These steps are imperative in ensuring that the recycled goods can be processed efficiently and effectively, mitigating the risks of contaminating recyclable streams.

Following the regular recycling routine, Brooklyn Park residents are also invited to participate in Materials Reuse Donation Day, slated for September 13 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Brooklyn Park Operations & Maintenance Facility, 8300 Noble Ave. N. In a partnership with local non-profits Bridging and Better Futures MN, community members can donate items that still have life left in them. The list of accepted items includes mattresses, furniture, and building materials, all of which should be in good condition and can be viewed on the City of Brooklyn Park's website.

Donated materials will aid individuals in need, channeling good-condition household items to those who could use them most. Bridging and Better Futures MN both provide essential services and support within the local community, making this a practical way of giving back and reducing waste.
