In a move to combat political interference in public health, the governors of California, Oregon, and Washington announced the creation of the Western Health Alliance, a partnership aimed at preserving science-driven health policies. According to a statement provided by Oregon Newsroom, the tri-state alliance is a response to widespread concerns regarding the Trump Administration's handling of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Leaders from each state fiercely condemned President Trump's drastic restructuring of the CDC, including the dismissal of numerous doctors and scientists. "President Donald Trump’s mass firing of CDC doctors and scientists — and his blatant politicization of the agency — is a direct assault on the health and safety of the American people. The CDC has become a political tool that increasingly peddles ideology instead of science, ideology that will lead to severe health consequences," the governors jointly stated on the Oregon Newsroom, in an effort to clearly signal their dissent. California, Oregon, and Washington will not stand to see their residents' well-being compromised due to politicized public health strategies.

The new Western Health Alliance aims to ensure that residents receive reliable and consistent health guidelines, especially concerning vaccinations. Erica Pan, MD, MPH, and California's State Public Health Officer, criticized the federal government's approach, saying, "The dismantling of public health and dismissal of experienced and respected health leaders and advisors, along with the lack of using science, data, and evidence to improve our nation's health are placing lives at risk." Her statement, obtained by Oregon Newsroom, stresses the importance of upholding integrity and supporting the mission to protect community health.

Sejal Hathi, MD, MBA, Director of the Oregon Health Authority, also expressed concern over the current public health climate. In her statement, as reported by Oregon Newsroom, she emphasized the need for "clear and transparent communication about vaccines — communication grounded in science, not ideology." Dr. Hathi pointed out the integral role vaccines play in modern medicine and the risks posed by inconsistent and politicized guidance. Dennis Worsham, Secretary of Health for Washington State, expressed solidarity with this science-centric approach, stating, "We stand firmly with trusted medical professionals and organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, as well as fellow West Coast health agencies — whose guidance remains rooted in rigorous research and clinical expertise," as mentioned on the Oregon Newsroom.

The Alliance also plans to adopt shared principles to bolster public trust in vaccines and public health as a whole, with an acknowledgment of the Tribal sovereignty in these matters. External medical bodies and health authorities will provide further recommendations and support to the Alliance's unified health strategies. This collective effort is set to counter any lack of consistent, science-based federal leadership, which the states consider a direct threat to national health security.
