Charlotte and Mecklenburg County residents have a new opportunity to use solar energy and reduce costs through an initiative called Solarize Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Launched earlier this summer by the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, Davidson Town, and the Centralina Regional Council, the campaign aims to make renewable energy more accessible for homeowners, businesses, and nonprofits, according to the City of Charlotte. Enrollment ends this fall, and full installation of systems may extend beyond 2025.

The program offers a group discount of up to 20%, which has already reached its Second Tier, lowering prices further. Interested participants can receive a free, no-obligation custom proposal assessment by October 31. This includes a 25-year bill reduction projection and detailed financial analysis with estimated payback periods and potential returns.

Participants can access more than ten years of solar experience and guidance throughout their projects. Larger system sizes also qualify for extra discounts of up to 30 cents per watt. The campaign integrates with the Duke PowerPair Program, offering up to $9,000 for eligible systems and battery setups, and the Duke Bridge Rate provides a hybrid net metering plan until 2027.

As per the City of Charlotte, so far, more than 225 property owners have registered interest, resulting in contracts totaling 244.8 kW of solar power and 507,952 pounds of CO₂ emissions avoided in North Carolina. Battery storage has reached 364.5 kWh through the campaign. Local installer Renu Energy Solutions supports the effort, and the “tiered” pricing structure means more participants can lower costs for all. The sign-up deadline is October 31, with December 31, as the last day for residential contracts. Businesses and nonprofits have additional time to plan larger projects. Information and registration are available on the program’s website, which also lists outreach events and informational sessions.
