Capt. Russ Harwell of the Charlotte Fire Department began his career unexpectedly while working near a volunteer fire station. Nearly 25 years into his service, Harwell faced a new challenge when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Regular physicals revealed a rise in his PSA levels, which led to a biopsy and diagnosis, followed by a decision to undergo a radical prostatectomy, as per a City of Charlotte release.
During his treatment and recovery, Harwell received support from colleagues at Charlotte Fire, including practical help such as meals and regular check-ins. This assistance helped him manage both the physical and logistical aspects of his recovery.
Since his surgery, Harwell’s PSA levels have remained undetectable as of spring 2024. Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson noted that Harwell’s experience highlights the importance of early detection. Harwell encourages others to use available health screenings and resources to monitor their health.
