A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officer is facing charges after a recent vehicle accident. Officer Matt Wilson, who is part of CMPD's North Division, was involved in a crash in Montgomery County, North Carolina, last Sunday. According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Internal Affairs Division, an investigation is ongoing following the incident, where North Carolina State Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene and subsequently charged Wilson with driving while intoxicated (DWI).
Employed by CMPD since May 26, 2020, and serving in the North Division, the off-duty Wilson now finds himself on unpaid administrative leave pending the internal review's conclusion. The charges, coming from an incident outside the CMPD jurisdiction, were confirmed by CMPD's newsroom release. Operating his personal vehicle during the time of the mishap, Wilson’s infraction reflects a misstep from the standards the CMPD professes to hold dearly.
Chief Jennings of the CMPD did not mince words in a statement addressing the issue, affirming a stance of utmost professionalism and ethical conduct. "Our department is committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct, both in uniform and beyond. Any behavior that undermines the integrity of our agency or erodes the trust of the public is unacceptable. We expect our officers to abide by the same laws and principles they are sworn to enforce, and we remain unwavering in our responsibility to serve this community with transparency, accountability and honor," Jennings stated, as per the official CMPD news release.
The incident raises concerns about law enforcement officers' conduct while off duty, reflecting on the department met by public demands for accountability. The department's commitment, echoed by Chief Jennings in responding to the occurrence, aligns with a broader reckoning around police adherence to the law they are charged to uphold.
