Charlotte residents near Lake Norman experienced a wastewater overflow this week as Charlotte Water crews responded to an incident. The spill occurred near 18000 Whispering Oaks Drive when a damaged low-pressure pipe caused 95 gallons of wastewater to overflow, with about 49 gallons reaching the lake, as reported by Queen City News.

Low-pressure systems are commonly used in lakeside communities to transport waste to gravity-fed sewers for treatment. According to WCNC, Charlotte Water spokesperson Cam Coley said improper disposal of items into plumbing or manholes can cause overflows, adding that even products labeled as “flushable” can clog the system.

As reported by WCCB Charlotte, the damaged low-pressure pipe was identified as the source of the overflow. Charlotte Water crews contained the spill and addressed the affected infrastructure.
