The Clayton Police Department is actively seeking assistance from the public in identifying a person of interest following a series of car fires and an apparent hate crime. In the early hours of August 5, officials were summoned to the 7500 block of Westmoreland Avenue, where three vehicles were found ablaze, and antisemitic graffiti was discovered at the scene. According to KSDK, police believe the fires, which consumed two parked cars on the street and one in a driveway, were intentionally set and all belonged to one family.
Investigators have to now been striving to gather more information and are turning to the community for leads. Surveillance footage released by the authorities shows a figure clad in dark shoes with visibly contrasting light-colored soles, and a light-colored sling bag or fanny pack. This person is believed to have been in the vicinity around the timeline of the incident. Footage from Fox2Now illustrates the person of interest wandering the street of Westmoreland Avenue near the occurrence of the arsons.
Additional context to the heightened urgency of this investigation comes from drone footage that captured messages left on the scene, including one saying "Death to IDF," referring to the Israel Defense Forces. As reported by First Alert 4, another part of the message included a direct threat to an individual, necessitating a portion of the graffiti to be blurred to protect the targeted individual's identity.
The combined efforts of local law enforcement and national organizations have resulted in a significant reward for information leading to an arrest. The ADL and Jewish Federation of St. Louis are offering a cash reward of up to $30,000, while the Jewish National Defense Network adds an additional $10,000, further complemented by CrimeStoppers, who propose a $2,000 reward. It is recommended that individuals with any knowledge of the events, or of the person of interest, should urgently contact the Clayton Police Department’s Detective Bureau at 314-290-8414. CrimeStoppers can also be reached to anonymously at 1-866-371-TIPS, as they are facilitating rewards for tips which directly aid in making an arrest.
In a statement obtained by KSDK, the Clayton Police clarified their commitment: "We remain committed to pursuing every available lead to bring accountability in this case. Community assistance is vital, and we encourage anyone with information to come forward."
