Labor Day in Cleveland isn’t just about backyard barbecues and end-of-summer celebrations, it's a nod to the hardworking men and women who are often at the forefront of danger. The Cleveland Fire Department took to social media to pay tribute to workers, both seasoned and new, on this day set aside to recognize the strides made in labor rights and worker protections. Cleveland Fire's post showed a dual recognition of their own, honoring historic labor movement achievements while also celebrating their newest class of cadets.
The language of the firefighting community brings its own nuance to the word "work." When companies arrive at a scene with live flames and smoke, they declare a "working fire." A structure fire becomes simply "a work." This Labor Day, the department's focus was on its 40th Cadet Class, who, the post explained, have been diligently working at work, a testament to both their commitment and the dedication of their skilled instructors. "This Labor Day we celebrate our newest workers, the 40th Cadet Class, as they worked on working at works and the dedication of their outstanding instructors during recent live burn exercises," the Cleveland Fire post read.
In acknowledging the day of rest for many workers, the post also tipped its hat to those who maintain the watch. Firefighters, much like many other public servants, do not pause for holidays, and the community expressed its gratitude towards those standing guard. "Wishing everyone a happy, safe, and relaxing Labor Day, and thanks to the members working today," Cleveland Fire concluded, a sentiment reflecting the inherent service and sacrifice embedded in their profession.
