The U.S. Coast Guard reported an interception of a small vessel carrying 21 individuals 26 miles off the coast of La Jolla, California. The operation, executed by the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter David Duren, took place Sunday evening as part of ongoing efforts to patrol coastal waters and manage unauthorized maritime activities.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard's official press release, the boarding team contacted the 30-foot boat at approximately 5:17 PM. Among those intercepted were 18 adults and three minors, including two unaccompanied teenagers. The majority of those on board, 17 individuals, identified themselves as of Mexican nationality, while three were from Venezuela and one from Honduras.
The David Duren's crew detained all vessel occupants, ensuring they were transferred to another Department of Homeland Security agency at Ballast Point. Here, the group of 21 faces further investigation to determine the subsequent steps according to the nation's laws and immigration protocols.
While immediate reports of distress or injury did not accompany the incident, it spotlights the persistent challenges relevant agencies face in overseeing maritime approaches to the United States.
