The Contra Costa Family Medicine Residency Program is reaching a significant milestone, celebrating 75 years of educating aspiring doctors. This milestone emphasizes the program’s enduring commitment to healthcare. Starting as a general practice training program in the 1950s, it has evolved to become one of the first family medicine residency programs in the nation, according to a statement on the county's website. This residency program, notable for its vast scope of services and rigorous training, equips physicians to care for patients across all age groups and life stages.

Renowned for its comprehensive three-year program, Contra Costa's residency scheme is flooded with applicants each year—800 for just 13 coveted spots, illuminating the program's allure and the competitive nature of the field, this program trains physicians ready to serve in a variety of situations including emergency medicine, intensive care, and delivering babies, in addition to outpatient primary care which enhance their skill set for real-world medical challenges. The program's impact extends globally; it sponsors a global health fellowship, which not only educates doctors in remote locales but also offers services to Indian Health Services sites, explained Dr. Leah Romito, the program's director and an alumnus herself, she honored the program's mission "to care for the underserved, to train full-spectrum family physicians, and to meet our communities needs wherever they are," Dr. Romito detailed in a statement obtained by the county's news release.

Contra Costa's program has earned its reputation by nurturing doctors who stay within the local community. As a point of pride, approximately one in 13 residents in Contra Costa County has a primary care physician who is a graduate of this very residency. In fact, Chief Medical Officer of Contra Costa Regional Medical Center & Health Centers, Dr. Sergio Urcuyo, a 2012 program graduate, emphasized the lasting influence of the residency, "For over 75 years we have educated generalist physicians in the ways of medicine, surgery and humanity," Dr. Urcuyo professed to the county's news release.

Operated under Contra Costa Health, the county's safety-net healthcare system, the program provides training at several locations, including the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and nine other outpatient centers. Additionally, it maintains academic ties with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), being part of the UCSF Family Medicine Educational Alliance. Earlier this month, the Board of Supervisors honored the program with a resolution, acknowledging its invaluable role in the community, and just recently, a reunion at the Contra Costa Country Club united more than 200 alumni and current residents—a show of solidarity and shared purpose. Looking beyond its illustrious past, Dr. Grant Colfax, CEO of Contra Costa Health, emphasized the future trajectory, "The next generation of family doctors will face new challenges, and we are dedicated to preparing them with the skills, compassion and resourcefulness they need to lead the way in community health," Colfax stated in the county's news publication.
