Fishing enthusiasts will need to reel in their plans at Deer Lake this year, as the well-liked angling spot in southeast Washington will shut down earlier than usual. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced that the lake would close on Sept. 2, citing a need for repairs to critical infrastructure, specifically a failing drain culvert that maintains water levels and directs flow back to the Tucannon River. This early closure deviates from the lake's traditional Nov. 30 end-of-season.
The repair plan includes draining Deer Lake starting today to replace both the culvert sitting at the lake's bed and the valve gate that regulates the water's release, according to the department's release. "We recognize that many people enjoy fishing this lake and appreciate everyone’s understanding about the closure," W.T. Wooten Wildlife Area manager Kari Dingman told the department, making a note of the construction team's simultaneous repairs on a dam at nearby Spring Lake, which could save resources.
There's a silver lining for the regulars at Deer Lake, who will be without their usual spot this autumn. They’re not entirely out of options. The wildlife area boasts several other fishing lakes, with Spring Lake set to open by Sept. 18 and to be restocked the following month. Additionally, avid anglers can cast their lines at Blue Lake year-round, or at Curl Lake until Oct. 30, and Rainbow and Watson lakes until the regular season closure on Nov. 30.
Despite the inconvenience, the lake is expected to be in prime condition for the planned March 1, 2026, season opening, when it will be freshly stocked with fish. The efforts underscore the department's dedication to the "preserve, protect, and perpetuate fish, wildlife, and ecosystems while providing sustainable fish and wildlife recreational and commercial opportunities."
