The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has a new face leading its Department of Urology, and it's none other than Dr. Kamal Pohar, who will be serving as both professor and the department's inaugural chair starting January 2026. Alongside this significant position, Pohar will also have the honor of holding the R. Bruce and Barbara Bracken Endowed Chair in Urology, a distinction that signals the high expectations placed on his leadership.
UC is tossing its hat in the ring, attempting to carve out a space at the forefront of urologic care and research with its newly minted department, which was established in July 2024. According to a release from the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Gregory C. Postel, dean of the College of Medicine, has expressed his confidence in Pohar, stating, "His deep commitment to patient care, educational excellence and groundbreaking research will shape this department into a national leader." Echoing this sentiment, Pohar conveyed his dedication to creating a department synonymous with "excellence, innovation and collaboration."
Before venturing to Cincinnati, Pohar made his mark at The Ohio State University as a professor of urology and vice chair for faculty affairs. Not one to stay within the confines of academia, he has actively participated on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Bladder Cancer Guideline Committee for over ten years, significantly impacting the standards of care on a national scale. His research ventures, extensively funded by notable organizations such as the National Institutes of Health and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, have taken aim at improving diagnostics and understanding cancer biology for better patient outcomes.
As an educator, Pohar is no stranger to acclaim, consistently drawing recognition as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor, a salute from his peers for his professional excellence. In setting the groundwork for UC's burgeoning department, Pohar is tasked with broadening clinical services and enhancing the medical training landscape. Pohar told the University of Cincinnati, “This is a unique opportunity to build a world-class program in a state I’ve called home for nearly 20 years.”
Pohar's extensive medical journey began with a Bachelor of Science in molecular biology, followed by a Doctor of Medicine with distinction from the University of Alberta. His postdoctoral sojourn took him from Manitoba to the prestigious halls of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Holding the reins of the Department of Urology, Pohar will be steering UC’s medical school towards a future of innovative urologic treatments and cutting-edge research.
