In remembrance of one of America's most somber anniversaries, Duluth firefighters have organized their annual 9/11 stair climbing event, set to take place at the AMSOIL Arena today, as reported by the City of Duluth. Participants will gather for a moment of silence at the precise time when Flight 11 struck the North Tower in 2001, commemorating the tragedy at 8:46 am before embarking on a physically arduous journey reflective of the one first responders faced 24 years ago. The event welcomes firefighters from various departments, such as the Duluth Fire Department and Air National Guard Fire, alongside Lake Superior College fire students.
The grueling climb symbolizes the 110 stories of the World Trade Center, a tribute to the 343 firefighters who perished while performing their duties during the attacks. In a statement released by the City Of Duluth, organizer and Duluth firefighter Andrew Olson echoed the everlasting commitment of his colleagues, saying, "We vowed to never forget the lives lost on September 11," and with poignant resolve, went on to describe the climb as an honor "in solidarity with the 343 brave brothers and sisters who made the ultimate sacrifice so others could live." Participants will don full turnout gear and air packs during the ascent, which is expected to span 25-35 minutes over approximately 2,200 steps. In the oppressive heat they will be enduring the weighted gear will not only test their endurance but also connect them to the legacy they ascend to honor.
Duluth Fire Department extends a note of gratitude towards DECC for hosting the stair climb. Those interested can find more details about this event, including time, location, and participation information, on the official City of Duluth site.
