Early Sunday morning, a structure fire ravaged a two-story, single-family home on the 500 block of East Eighth Street in Duluth, causing significant damage and the unfortunate loss of two pets. The Duluth Fire Department was called to the scene at approximately 12:29 a.m., as reported by an official press release. Upon their arrival, firefighters encountered the front sections of both floors engulfed in flames. A collective effort from multiple fire crews, including squads from Downtown, Lincoln Park, UMD, and Lakeside, worked to extinguish the blaze.
The fire, which led to the displacement of four individuals residing in the home, prompted a swift self-evacuation of the occupants before the fire department's arrival. Thankfully, no human injuries were reported; however, the fire claimed the lives of a dog and one cat, with another feline being found alive post-response. The estimated property damage is currently pegged at $116,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal's office.
As the community grapples with the aftermath, the Duluth Fire Department has extended gratitude towards its partners at Minnesota Power, Duluth Police Department, and St Louis County/911 dispatch for their support during the emergency response. Resources and assistance were critical as teams worked in unison to manage the incident efficiently and with public safety as their top priority.
