Heads up, Durham drivers—some late-night construction might alter your usual route this Friday. The N.C. Department of Transportation has announced a temporary closure of Alston Avenue to finalize median barrier wall construction under the Pettigrew Street and CSX/NS bridges. The stretch between Gann Street and Main Street is set to shut down from 7 p.m. on Friday to the early morning hours of 6 a.m. next Saturday, assuming the weather decides to cooperate.
The detours are simple enough to follow. If you're heading south on N.C. 55, you'll need to quickly adapt to reroute via Main Street, zip along Fayetteville Street to join N.C. 147 (Durham Freeway) SB. For those driving northbound, your path will diverge to join N.C. 147 (Durham Freeway) NB, then duck down Fayetteville Street to loop back to Main Street. According to the N.C. Department of Transportation's official statement, the department urges motorists to pay close attention to the posted signs—those silent sentinels are there for your safety.
These overnight projects are part of the routine upkeep and enhancement to ensure our roadways remain safe and functional. It's an inconvenience, to be sure, but a necessary step to maintain the infrastructure that so many rely on daily.
During the closure, drivers should also prepare to use extra caution when navigating the work zone. The N.C. Department of Transportation warns that it's not just about following detour signs—it's also about being vigilant to keep both workers and fellow drivers safe. It's important to maybe even slow down a touch, allowing ample time to react to the unexpected, and ensuring you and everyone on the road can safely get to where they need to be.
